Soul Pioneer Wilson Pickett Dies at 64 (LA Times)
The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member died at a hospital near his Reston, Va. home after suffering a heart attack, according to a statement released by his personal manager, Margo Lewis. Chris Tuthill, of the management company Talent Source, said Pickett had been suffering from health problems for the past year.
[Sad. I remember many years ago when I ran a website called "Oldie of the Day," I would choose a hit song from the 1950s-1960s and explain why I believed that song was a good oldie, which ended soon after my first girlfriend dumped me. Despite that, people still remind me about that site and I still love oldies music, so here is a current take on "Mustang Sally":
Here is an oldie that celebrates a classic muscle or sports car, the Ford Mustang, but what may slip past listeners ears is how that car acts as a metaphor for relationships. The guy in this song has erred by choosing a woman who values superficial things, which does not become apparent until he buys her a 1965 Mustang, but she will not let him ride in it. The message to take away here is not to rush into things because it takes a long time to really know a person. BK]
