King's 'Cell' calls up world of terror (Star-Telegram)
In Cell, struggling illustrator/author (and avowed cellphone non-user) Clay Riddell strolls along the fringes of Boston Common, celebrating long-sought success. He's just sold his first graphic novel, plus a sequel, to a Boston publisher for a lot of money, and this might salvage his marriage. But at 3:03 p.m., just as Clay's about to purchase ice cream from a street vendor, every cellphone in the world issues a weird signal that turns anyone using theirs at that moment into a slavering, murderous demon. This happens pretty much on the first page. The minority who aren't yammering away on cells become targets. Even pets aren't safe. It's vintage King, who doesn't spare graphic description. An unfortunate poodle is "fluff at one moment, guts at the next."
