National Popular Culture Association Conference 2007 Recap (Discourse Chronicle)
[Here is a recap of my trip to Boston:
Day 0
Continental Airlines showed Will Smith in The Pursuit of Happyness during the leg from Houston to Boston. An excellent movie and definitely inspiring given my string of rejection letters from PhD programs.
Boston experienced unseasonable weather equivalent to that of a Wisconsin winter. I packed the wrong long leather coat and froze that night.
In-room internet is still too expensive given that wireless internet is free in the hotel lobby.
Day 1
I purchased an appropriate long leather coat and umbrella before learning that the conference item this year was a travel umbrella.
I met up with fellow comic scholars and heard panels on comics.
I recounted my MA experience thus far at dinner and thankfully other comic scholars encouraged me to continue studying English and comics.
I caught a cold as a result of shock from Boston weather.
Day 2
I bought necessary cold medication at a nearby grocery store and began medicating myself.
I supported my fellow rhetoric colleagues Ryan Malpurs and Jen Haley by listening to their papers.
I witnessed and participated as an audience member in a parody comics panel devoted to the Institute of Korvac Studies (hilarious!).
Day 3
I visited Newbury Comics and found myself disappointed since it stocked no back issues.
I bought my Dad a Boston Harley-Davidson T-shirt in Quincy Market as I always do whenever I go to a conference.
I visited both Cheers bars (one used for exterior shots on the show and another featuring a replica interior from the set on the show).
I presented and fulfilled my duties as a panel chair.
I must say that I experienced another successful conference despite catching cold that I am now almost completely over except for some congestion. Next year is being held in San Francisco. BK]
